Gaelen Krause

Gaelen Krause grew up in Seattle, WA, nestled between Puget Sound and Lake Washington. His relationship with the local waters was born early in his childhood through rowing, sailing, kayaking and other recreational pursuits. In an effort to stay forever connected to the ocean, Gaelen graduated in May from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelors Degree in Integrated Engineering, specializing in Naval Architecture and Composites Materials.

Through university, Gaelen has become increasingly involved with SNAME on both the local and national levels. He is the chairman of the UBC section, which has had a successful year of growth and student engagement. Gaelen is also the chairman of the Student Section Standards Committee, which is charged with the task of maintaining a guiding document for the creation and self-evaluation of student sections.

In 2008, Gaelen interned with the Naval Architecture group at The Glosten Associates in Seattle, an experience that cemented his commitment to naval architecture, and his desire to work in the field for many years to come. After graduation from UBC, Gaelen started work as a Junior Marine Systems Engineer with the Canadian Submarine Management Group, working on the refit of HMCS Chicoutimi.

Much Gaelen’s free time is spent on the water, racing and cruising sailboats. He may also be found in the mountains of British Columbia backcountry skiing. Gaelen is the captain of the UBC Autonomous ‘Sailbot’ Team (shameless plug: www.sailbot.blogspot.com), which placed second at the 5th Annual International Robotic Sailing Race at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. He also volunteers his time on the SNAME Regatta Organizing Committee, and is a member of STX Canada Marine’s two-time defending crew under skipper Dan McGreer.
