SNAME’s Technical and Research Environmental Engineering Committee primarily focuses on researching shipboard emissions and developing or investigating technical and operational measures to reduce or eliminate these emissions. The issues under investigation are contemporary, indeed three of the research panels, described below are off-shoots of special ad hoc panels created to address pressing environmental-performance issues: illegal discharges of oily waste (Oily Waste Water and Bilge Water, (EC-3)) and Greenhouse Gases (EC-11). The work product of two these panels have had positive impact on the industry and on deliberations at the International Maritime Organization to regulate shipping. The newly restructured Environmental Management panel (EC-7) will look at the education of marine engineers and naval architects in sustainability and the environment. Similarly the Marine Vessel Environmental Performance panel (EC-10) is developing guidance and metrics for designers and operators to ensure cost effective compliance with the regulatory requirements and to quantify performance related to ship emissions and resource consumption. Finally, the Environmental Engineering Committee is always willing to support new projects of member interest either within our existing committee structure or by creating a new research panel.
