ABSTRACT: DEVELOPMENT OF A TWO-SHIP TEST PROGRAM FEATURING DP CONTROL
In preparation for the Vehicle Transfer At-sea TEST (VTAST), the Navy sponsored a series of basin tests involving scale models of a Watson class LMSR and the Dockwise heavy lift ship M/S Transshelf, each outfitted with a dynamic positioning system. This presentation discusses the preparation, setup, and execution of these tests which involved special considerations, as these were the first two-ship dynamic positioning tests ever conducted in a test basin. All test goals were met by both the basin tests and the subsequent VTAST program.
SPEAKER BIOS:
MR. JOHN KLOETZLI Mr. John Kloetzli (M) has 37 years of experience as a naval architect supporting numerous ship design programs for the US Navy and USCG. For the last eight years he has worked as a Senior Consulting Engineer at the CSC Advanced Marine Center providing technical leadership for PEO Ships acquisition programs and Sealift Research and Development efforts. His work includes conducting wide-ranging research of COTS practices in order to formulate cost-effective Navy design solutions. This has lead to developing at-sea demonstration concepts, writing test plans, coordinating support contractors, conducting model tests and at-sea trials, analyzing data, and integrating results into acquisition program specifications. In 2007 he managed a unique two-ship Dynamic Positioning model test program. Mr. Kloetzli is currently supporting NAVSEA as the Principal Naval Architect for the Mobile Landing Platform (MLP) acquisition program.
DR. THEODORE MORDFIN Dr. Theodore Mordfin (M) has three decades of professional experience in the automotive, aerospace, marine, and offshore industries. In recent years, he has directed the development and application of advanced multi-disciplinary tests, simulations, and training systems to support deployment of next-generation at-sea cargo transfer systems. Since 2009, Dr. Mordfin serves as the Deputy Director of the Submarine and Ship Technologies Directorate at the Advanced Marine Center of CSC in Washington, DC.
MR. ARTHUR RAUSCH Mr. Art Rausch is employed at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division and is currently assigned to the Program Executive Office, Ships Strategic and Theater Sealift Program (PMS385) as the acting Principal Assistant Program Manager for Research and Development, Small Business Innovative Research, and Future Platforms. He has over 36 years experience in R&D of Seabasing and Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore systems including management of the Mobile Landing Platform Vehicle Transfer At-Sea Test and the shipboard crane Pendulation Control System.
