ABSTRACT:  Model Testing Volvo 70 Racing Yachts
Farr Yacht Design was contracted to design two Volvo 70 Racing Yachts for the 2008-2009 Volvo Ocean Race.  The development plan for this project included an integrated program of tank testing, computational fluid dynamics and race modeling.  This presentation focuses on the tank testing program and the unique challenges posed by the class of boats and the sophistication of the design effort.  All aspects of the tank testing program will be reviewed including model scale and facility selection, model design and construction, development of the test plans, test execution and data analysis.  In addition, the presentation will feature discussions of how the test program evolved based on results, successes and setbacks.  Much of the presentation will be focused on technical areas applicable to any complex testing project, but the performance of these exceptional boats will also be featured.
