The November meeting of the SNAME Chesapeake Section will be Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at 5:30 PM at the Washington Navy Yard. The presentation will be on Corrosion Resistant Aluminum / Low Cost Titanium to be presented by Mr. Lawrence Kramer of Concurrent Technologies Corp.
Please make reservations or cancellations by Thursday, November 12, to sname.cs.meetings@gmail.com. When making a reservation, please indicate your entrée selection and membership status (see below). Also please indicate if you are a foreign national as attendance is restricted.
ABSTRACT: Corrosion Resistant Aluminum / Low Cost Titanium
High strength aluminum-magnesium marine alloys can display corrosion problems in service that were not anticipated during initial construction. A clad-like aluminum plate that combines a high strength core with a corrosion resistant surface layer has been found to be a possible solution.
Light weight, corrosion resistant titanium piping was utilized in some Naval ship applications, but higher acquisition costs have caused a return to copper-nicked piping despite the titanium having a three times longer life. Net shape pipe formed from low cost titanium starting stock was evaluated as a means of providing titanium pipe that is cost neutral with copper nickel.
BIO: Lawrence S. Kramer
Mr. Kramer is a Principal Staff Member at Concurrent Technologies Corporation where he is developing corrosion resistant aluminum alloys, low cost titanium structures, composite armor and friction stir welding. Prior to joining CTC, Mr. Kramer performed technical and marketing consulting for Fansteel, Inc. and helped develop western markets for former Soviet technology at Ashurst Technology Center. At Lockheed Martin, Mr. Kramer developed Weldalite aluminum-lithium alloys and transitioned them from the laboratory to use in the external tank of the space shuttle. He received his B.S. in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from Lehigh University, and an M.S. from The Johns Hopkins University.
