SNAME/ASNE Chesapeake Section Technical Meeting - April 22, 2010

The Joint SNAME/ASNE April Technical Meeting will be held on April 22, 2010.

Students from the US Naval Academy and Virginia Tech will be presenting their senior capstone projects to the community.

US Naval Academy Presenters
Speaker: William R. Garland
Abstract: Stepped Planing Hull Investigation
Planing hulls were developed to overcome the inherent disadvantages associated wither operating displacement hulls at high speeds, but their form has not yet been perfected. Proportionally, only a relatively small amount of a planing hull contributes to lift, while the majority of the afterbody simply adds to wetted area and frictional resistance. If flow separation can be achieved from a step aptly located and properly sized on the hull bottom and adequate ventilation occurs aft of the step, then resistances and power requirements will be reduced substantially at high speeds.

Speaker: Andrea M Lazzaro
Abstract: Material Properties of Functionally Graded Metal Matrix Composites

Tests were performed on a functionally graded metal matrix composite (MMC), in particular a copper-tungsten MMC, in order to determine basic properties such as electrical resistivity, hardness, density, and particle distribution of the constituents within the MMC. The tested material is being evaluated in terms of its ability to withstand the strain rates and temperatures of an electromagnetic launcher (EML).

Testing techniques are discussed and recommendations for modeling expected properties based on the rule of mixtures is presented.

Speaker: Jason C. Murphy
Abstract: A Novel Approach to Turbulence Stimulation for Ship-Model Testing
This project examined the use of turbulence stimulation to create a "similar" boundary layer between a ship and its model. Data collected from hot film sensors were used to assess the flow around both a flat plate and a 2-D model in order to evaluate the effect of turbulence stimulators.

Continuing Education

Practical Seakeeping Course 2009-2010

*Please Note Change of Dates*
BY DR. EDWARD LEWANDOWSKI
CSC ADVANCED MARINE

This course will provide the background necessary to understand seakeeping specifications and reports. After a general discussion of performance requirements, the specification of the wave environment will be described, including definitions of sea states and wave spectra as well as identification of sources of data. Determination of the ship response to the waves will next be explored, including use of model tests and prediction tools; the available tools will be described and compared. Quantitative measures of seakeeping performance, including absolute and relative motions, motions-at-a-point, slamming, MSI and MII, will be defined. Use of these quantitative measures in conjunction with performance criteria for the development of operability indices will be explained. Finally, several examples will be considered, including a detailed examination of a seakeeping test report and development of an operability index.

This course is intended for those involved in Ship Design and Integration. Familiarity with basic naval architecture is assumed. Note that the theory of ship motions will not be developed in this course; the emphasis is on the understanding and practical use of the input and output of the available prediction tools. Credit hours may be earned by engineers renewing their professional licenses. (0.8 CEU credits)
