Student Design Competition

As navel architects and marine engineers, our challenge is to be innovative within design and operational restraints. At SNAME, we know we have some of the best and the brightest students around and each year the SNAME Student Design Competition picks a design concept to challenge the student’s creativity to achieve a design goal given limited materials and time. Teams face-off against each other in a Battle Royal that will push each team’s design to the limit. This year, with $1000 in cash prizes donated by NETSCO, the stakes are high and the SNAME Student Design Competition promises to be a battle you don’t want to miss.

Students and Young Professionals Job Fair

The SNAME Student Steering Committee is hosting the "Students and Young Professionals Job Fair." We would like to you to participate in this year’s Job Fair. As the future Naval Architects and Naval, Marine and Ocean Engineers, it is imperative that SNAME, as the industry’s leading professional society, provide the opportunities to get ahead!

The Job Fair will take place on Thursday, November 4th from 10:00am – 2:30pm in the Regency Ballroom, 2nd Floor. Additionally, each employer will have the opportunity to schedule 30‐minute interviews with prospective  candidates following the Job Fair from 2:30pm – 5:00pm.

As a prospective job seeker, you will be able to post resumes for FREE on the SNAME Career Center website and meet potential employers. Begin by creating an account and register for the Job Fair at the same time. Create personal job alerts based on YOUR personal preferences and inetersts and allow employers to seek YOU out! Register online at the SNAME Career Center

Don’t forget to first post your resume on the Career Center and then, register online for the Job fair. For assistance on registering and posting resumes, please see the Job Seekers Registration Guide

Student Papers

If you are doing research either independently or with a faculty or industry member, we would like to hear about it. Not  only is this is a great opportunity to get your name out there in the NAME community but it also provides you with the practical experience for future academic or industry endeavors. Papers submitted will be reviewed by the SSC and Student Program Committee and selected papers will be presented during the Student Paper Track. Send any questions or papers to SSC Secretary/Treasurer Marc Woolliscroft at mowoolli@umich.edu.

Assistant Presiding Officers

APOs assist the Presiding Officer during the presentation of papers during the Annual Meeting. Typically this involves keeping time during the presentation as well as offering up thought provoking discussion questions if there are none from the room. Your name will be announced and you will have a seat at the head of the room. This position is an honor and all APOs positions are currently reserved for students in officer positions at their respective schools as a reward for their hardwork.

Student Congress

The Student Congress is the only governance meeting of the SNAME student body each year. This is the time when the Bylaws of the SSC are reviewed, discussed, and updated. Also, this is when Elections for the SSC Officer positions take place. If you would like to play a role in shaping the SSC, I highly suggest you run for one of the following:

  • Chair
  • Vice Chair
  • Secretary/Treasurer
  • Communications Chair
  • Electronic Media Chair

Student Summit

2010 once again brings the bi-annual SNAME Student Summit. In the past, this has consisted of a series of breakout groups and surveys (both before and during the Annual Meeting) to gauge the pulse of the students. This year will involve more open end discussions to shift the focus from problems to solutions. The goal of this year’s Student Summit is to create a knowledge base that can be used by the SSC as well as individual student sections to resolve any issues that arise.

Saturday Student Social in Seattle

For the first time ever, students are invited to join this students-only exploration of Seattle and evening social! Students will be transported around Seattle from noon until 8, with several events lined up.

The event starts with shipyard tours on Elliot Bay, where students can see the construction of Washington State Ferries, port pilot ships, and other local vessels. Students are then given several hours of free time to explore downtown Seattle, and get to see enjoy the Seattle waterfront. Following the downtown exploration, a dinner social will take place at The Alibi Room (pending total student participation). Students can then enjoy an evening on the town, or return to the Annual Meeting accomodations in Bellevue.

Student participation will be limited, so look for a registration in the near future! Questions can be directed to University of Washington Student Chair Alan Orthmann at ajorthmann@gmail.com
