Dear SNAME Students,
Hello, I’m Colin Shields, your new Student Steering Committee (SSC) Chair. I am very excited to take over this position and serve you all this year!
The SSC has focused on student feedback from the Annual Meeting as well as surveys to develop a set of goals for the upcoming year. These goals aim to deliver the benefits of SNAME, such as networking and information flow, effectively and concisely to us, the student members. The SSC will emphasize improved communication that provides tangible benefits and information through an Outreach Committee.
The Outreach Committee will strive to strengthen bonds between the SSC and student sections. The creation of a new SSC Facebook page will link to student sections pages and highlight major news from all sections as well as providing an accessible and familiar line of communication between the SSC and other student members. The Outreach Committee will concentrate on staying in contact with student section chairs via phone calls to ensure that the SSC stays focused on issues relevant to the students and is aware of any developments in the student group.
The SSC monthly newsletter is also undergoing significant updates. Visual improvements include improved organization and a more streamlined appearance. Additionally, the content is being updated to include a publication suggestion of the month, highlights of a professional SNAME section, and a short survey to help the SSC better understand the needs of student sections. With information flow in mind, the newsletter highlights will now be broken down into bullet points posted at the start of each email for ease of access.
As always, the SSC will put our effort into enhancing the annual meeting. Sought after improvements include: Job fair expansion, improved event scheduling, and new additions to the design competition. These changes will be important steps to continuing the tradition of enjoyable and successful annual meetings.
The SSC and I are looking forward to a productive and fruitful year together and we know we will serve the student member’s to the best of our ability.
Sincerely,

Colin Shields
