SSS Guide

The Student Standards Panel was first established in 2008 as a group of established SNAME student leaders which represented successful student programs. This panel gathered for the purpose of creating a living document to serve as a guide to student sections across the globe, providing a crash course on SNAME policies, quick definitions of suggested section positions, fund raising ideas, and suggested outreach programs.

This Panel was called to order this year by the current SSC Officers to amend the two year old document, updating it with new suggested student standards, while addressing new international sections, and consolidating unclear sections to make the document more useful to section leaders. The current Panel, consisting of new Student leaders, as well as previous graduates and members of the Young Professionals Program is proud to present the most recent edition of this guide below;

The 2012 Student Sections Standards Committee is Chaired by Devin Witt, a Graduate Student at the University of Michigan.  Along with the SSS Committee members, updates and revisions were made to this working document.

Dear SNAME Student Section Leaders,

It is my honor to present to you the 2012 Student Section Standards Guide to help your school’s SNAME student sections grow and continue to prosper. This guide is the sum total of 11 successful SNAME student leaders, and is updated yearly by the Student Section Standards Committee (SSS) to address new ideas, new programs, and new policies.

The guide addresses management techniques along with comments and advice on how to run and organize a successful SNAME student section both foreign and domestic. The appendices include a variety of useful documents and checklist such as financial checklist, monthly student section duty checklist, and procedures for starting a new SNAME student section. This guide also includes a list of your local young professional chairs along with contact information for many maritime companies. Keep this information close by because you never know when you may want to contact a company to present to your student section or you may need some advice from a local young professional.

The information in this guide will be very useful to you and your student sections thus feel free to review the guide and allow other members of your student section to review it as well. If you have any questions that are not answered in this guide or further comments, please do not hesitate to contact me at devinw@umich.edu at any time.

Sincerely,

Devin Witt, SSS Committee Chairman 2012
