CDR Michael Corl graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in May of 1995 with a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Upon graduation, CDR Corl was assigned as an Engineer Officer in Training to USCGC Rush, a 378' high endurance cutter stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii where he served as the Auxiliary Division Officer and the Assistant Engineer Officer.
In 1997, CDR Corl was selected for post graduate study in Naval Architecture Marine Engineering, and achieved a Masters of Science Engineering at the University of Michigan in Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. While at the University of Michigan, CDR Corl, designed a Juniper-based icebreaking buoy tender and submitted the work as an alternative for the replacement of CGC Mackinaw.
CDR Corl came to the Academy in the summer of 1999 as an Instructor in the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering section. In addition to his teaching duties, CDR Corl served as the Advisor for the Class of 2004. During the summers, CDR Corl participates in the Engineering Officer in Training summer program and the Academy Introduction to Mission program.
In the summer of 2005, CDR Corl began a two year Ph.D. Leave at the University of Michigan. In June of 2007, CDR Corl successfully defended his Ph.D. Dissertation in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. His research is titled “Methodology for Optimizing Commonality Decisions in Multiple Classes of Ships”.
CDR Corl recently served as the Assistant Dean of Academics. The Assistant Dean is responsible for managing the Academic Division’s budget for both appropriated and non-appropriated funds. In addition to managing the budget, the Assistant Dean also serves and the Internship Coordinator, Faculty In-Service Day planner and the liaison to the Cadet Division.
In August 2012, CDR Corl took over as the Head of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Major at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
The $5000 scholarship will be awarded to the junior level cadets in the NA&ME Major. The award will be given for their hard work and dedication to such a challenging and important academic major.
