SNAME SUOMI COLLEGIUM
The first Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, SNAME, meeting in Finland was held at the Aker Arctic Technology offices and ice test basin in Helsinki on the evening of December 16th, 2009.
The meeting was well attended, and the audience included local members, many of them who are over 30 year members, visiting members from the US and Canada (Canadian Maritime, Eastern Canadian, New York Metropolitan and Texas Sections represented) and local non-member professionals, several of whom have already submitted application forms to become members.
The meeting was opened by Mikko Niini, (SNAME Member 1976) Managing Director of Aker Arctic and SNAME Suomi Collegium Leader.
Jens Madsen, a naval architect with Maersk Drilling of Copenhagen, gave a very informative presentation on Jack-Up Drilling Rigs by walking the assembled group through one of his new rigs using an impressive visual simulation.
This was followed by Kirsi Tikka, Vice President of Technology and Business Development at the American Bureau of Shipping, who made an excellent presentation the fast moving Developments around Greenhouse Gas Initiatives, IMO and the shipping industry. There followed a lively discussion on proposed approaches such as the Energy Efficiency design Index, EEDI,
After a short break, Goran Wilkman, Manager of Research and Field Trials at Aker Arctic give a presentation on his work on the Model Testing and Full-scale Evaluation of Icebreakers and Arctic Ships.
The meeting part of the evening concluded with presentations by Peter Noble and Rod Allan, who discussed new SNAME initiative such as the updated website; the new flagship publication, (MT), the expanding Symposia, Meetings and Conferences activities and of particular interest to the Finnish attendees, the SNAME initiatives relating to Ice and Arctic Technology, such as ICETECH 2010, Anchorage September 2010 and the inaugural Arctic Technology Conference, ATC, Houston, February 2011..
The evening concluded with an interesting, but very cold, tour of the Aker Arctic ice basin – a truly world class facility.
