McGreer was born in Vancouver, B.C. and has always had a passion for the sea and boating. Dan as a young boy he spent many hours sailing and building boats with his father. This interest grew to include the design of sailboats, which inspired him to study engineering at the University of British Columbia. In 1983, Dan graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a Naval Architecture Option.
After graduation, Dan worked at UBC for 8 years under Dr. Sander Calisal as a research engineer in the Mechanical Engineering Department. During his time at UBC, Dan was involved in research projects related to the safety and design of fishing vessels including: model testing, full scale trials and software development. In 1991, he began his professional career as a project engineer for Wartsila Marine, which would eventually become STX Canada Marine.
For the past 20 years, Dan has grown in experience within the company and currently resides as a Principal Engineer at STX Canada Marine. His roles include the Manager of Advanced Analysis and the Design Manager for the Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS) project.. He has worked on numerous ship design projects while at STX Canada Marine including managing the design of two offshore patrol vessels for the New Zealand Navy, and the Great Lakes Icebreaker, Makinaw, for the USCG. Dan has been involved in all aspects of ship design including; preliminary concept development, contract designs, ship performance assessment, computational fluid dynamics, marine system design and ship model testing and full scale trials.
Dan joined SNAME as a student and has been actively involved throughout his career. He has published and presented papers at local section meetings and international conferences and has been actively involved in the Pacific Northwest Section executive. Dan has also attended over a dozen SNAME Annual Meetings and is currently on the technical meeting panel session committee. Dan continues to enjoy sailboat racing and recently skippered the winning teams in the first two SNAME Annual Meeting Sailing Regattas.
For the past fifteen years Dan has been very involved in encouraging student participation in SNAME as well as an industry mentor for the UBC Ship Design class and assistes the students with their ship design projects.
