Mr. Rob Gies has held various positions of increasing responsibility since he was hired by Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) as an Engineer in 1990. His expertise is focused on main propulsion machinery, pumps, valves, shafting, propellers, machinery alignments, construction, technology insertion and many other areas. 

Prior to his current position, Mr. Gies has worked on overhaul and new construction aircraft carriers, submarines and commercial ship repair.  He has served as an Engineering Supervisor, Deputy Ship Design Manager, Ship Design Manager and the Manager of the Washington Office of Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding.

In addition to his work accomplishments, Mr. Gies has won numerous awards for his achievements and contributions to the industry.  He was the Recipient of the Chief of Naval Operations Environmental Award; NNS Materials and Manufacturing Division Buster Award; and the NNS President's Model of Excellence Award for Process Improvements.

Mr. Gies has also served in several roles throughout his career, including: Member, ASNE and the Navy League; Past Chair and Director, Eastern Virginia Section of ASME; Past Co-Chair of the Regional Student Conference/ Regional Engineering Advisory Board and the Innovation Research Park Industry Advisory Board.  He was an Eagle Scout and Cubmaster of Pack 212 and is currently an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 212.  In his sparetime, Mr. Gies coaches basketball for the Churchland YMCA and baseball for the Churchland Little League.  He is a Trustee for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy (NSA) and Chair of the Advancement Committee of NSA.  Furthermore, Mr. Gies was recognized for the following: Cub Scout Den Leader of the Year; Recipient of the "Top 40 Under 40" by Inside Business Magazine; the Peninsula Young Engineer of the Year; and the Old Dominion University College of Engineering Wall of Honor Recipient.

Mr. Gies' SNAME activities truly emphasize his commitment to the Society: Recruiter Award - Hampton Roads Section; Co-Author of a SNAME Technical Paper and Presentation, "The Application of Innovative Methods for Aircraft Carrier Shafting Installation and Alignment"; and Past Chair, Hampton Roads Section.
