Stabilization and Motion Control of Advanced Ships & Craft

J. William McFann - President, Island Engineering, Inc.

Island Engineering is one of a very few companies that specialize in providing the stabilization and motion control a ship or craft requires in order to be able to accomplish its purposes. That may involve ensuring a ship-launched weapon will hit its target, or a helo or RIB can be deployed safely, or a yacht owner's martini won't spill. Requirements and solutions can vary widely from one case to the next, and our speaker will discuss some of the more interesting ones his company has dealt with and show some of the ships, craft and equipment involved.

Island Engineering handles all aspects of this work, from basic analysis to design and engineering, all the way to fabrication and shipboard installation of stabilization systems. Moreover, they're well known to many of us for their ability and willingness to tackle all manner of unusual and challenging engineering projects.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mr. McFann established Island Engineering in 1999 for the purpose of developing and testing advanced marine vehicle designs and dynamic motion and flight control systems. From 1987 through 1999 he held positions as Design Engineer, Engineering Manager, and Director of Special Projects at Maritime Dynamics, Inc. (MDI), another eminent company in this field. He has managed key elements of the design, development and testing of numerous monohull, catamaran, SWATH and SES craft, not only for the US Navy but also for German, Swedish, Norwegian, Korean and Egyptian naval and commercial craft.
Mr. McFann holds a BSME degree from Purdue University and is a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and the International Hydrofoil Society.
