There are many activities that are underway at SNAME and it has been a busy period transtioning into my new role here. I wanted to share some of my initial thoughts with you about areas of interest and focus. The first is this message and some thoughts on blogs. After thorough discussion we have decided to move the open blogs behind the home page. These blogs are still available after entering our portal and I encourage posting information relevant for our members.

I am very happy to announce that we have a new Membership Director, Mike Hall. Mike comes to us from the Marine Technology Society and is a professional membership manager having worked in both the association and the professional society world for not for profit organizations for the past 15 years. Mike has served in membership-related positions for the National Association of Manufacturers, Intermodal Association of North America, the Homebuilders Association of Maryland, and since 2006, with the Marine Technology Society (MTS). Mike has been effective in growing and supporting membership in each of these groups.

We are very pleased to announce that the Stavros Niarchos Foundation has very generously decided to underwrite a grant to SNAME's Greek Section in support of their students attending our Annual Meeting. This action furthers SNAME's support of students, is important recognition of the significant work of the Greek Section and our SNAME European Regional Office (SERO) in Piraeus. We have a very active student program this year and this grant will enable broader participation and enrich the overall program.

On 1 January I was honored to relieve Keith Michel as President of SNAME. Please join me in expressing our appreciation to him for his exemplary leadership these last two years. Keith has been an enthusiastic SNAME member and active volunteer for 30 years and I am pleased to say that he will not be going far. He has agreed to become the Chair of the (mt) Editorial Committee as Jay Carson steps up as Functional Vice President for Knowledge Management. This dedication to our Society and profession is emblematic of the commitment and selflessness exhibited by the many volunteers who work closely with the Headquarters staff to provide for the continued deployment of services for and professional development of our Society’s membership and marine industry professionals at large.

In essence there are only two ways that a person enters the marine industry: Either your family was involved in the industry, or your entry into the industry was an accident.
Family involvement consists of two categories also: Those who had family that tried to discourage their offspring to enter the industry in every possible way, but the offspring somehow decided to ignore their family's advice, and those who are the scions of successful family businesses.

To my colleagues in the NY Met Section;
I extend to you my cordial greetings as Webmaster of the SNAME NY Met Section microsite. My friend and current Section Secretary Jon Spiteri having made a strong start last season in developing our site, I’m eager to serve you in further enhancing its features and utility. Indeed, through Project Voyager, the microsites for all Sections, as well as the vastly upgraded www.sname.org environment, are crucial elements and value propositional components of our Fellowship, enabling access to and transmission of information among members as never before.
