The objective of the Lynceus project is to develop and demonstrate ultra-low power wireless body-area-network technologies for enabling unobtrusive localisation and tracking of people for onboard and overboard search and rescue as well as for safe evacuation of ships during emergency.

The Lynceus novel technology will be transferred into the SME-driven market segments of smoke alarm/fire detection systems, lifesaving equipment, emergency management decision support systems and assistive search and rescue equipment through the participation of SME and SME Associations.

The term “AT/B” has become part of many conversations regarding marine transportation systems. This is true not only here in the United States, but increasingly, overseas as well. In fact, there are now more AT/B’s outside the United States, than there are within its’ borders. So what was once thought of as an American transport mode, is in fact far more widespread and the numbers are increasing worldwide. In recent months, perhaps as an indication of the inroads the concept has made in the trades where ships dominate, there has been a great deal of public negativity regarding the capabilities of AT/B’s, to the point where even some class Society representatives have publically stated that AT/B’s are not suited for certain cargoes, and articles have appeared in respected maritime magazines that are critical of the concept. As a designer, the Author sees such criticism as a compliment – an indication that the concept is now recognized as a system to be considered, and to be competed-with. Such positions are to be considered and answered – not cast aside. This paper will be a primer on the AT/B and help to educate business and technical leaders as to the reality of the AT/B vs the contrary
positions taken about the concept. It is a practical discussion based on real experience and will show that while the AT/B is a fine, engineered and safe marine transport system, it is applicable in some cases, and not applicable in others.

The implementation of vessel designs is usually achieved through contracts for ship construction or conversion. Accordingly, the design process and the design organization’s product have to anticipate and take into account the constraints and requirements of the contracts that control the use of the design, as well as the contract that initiates the design process. This paper addresses the most common contractual factors that have to be considered during preparation of ship designs.

A new conceptual approach to the design of marine electrical distribution systems is suggested as an alternative to existing methods. Ferries, escort tugs, and harbor vessels having electrical distribution systems with direct current links and battery banks have problems associated with necessity of fast battery recharging during
short stops. The use of a modular approach to a battery design is a possible solution to these problems. The alternative distribution systems are examined to clarify the point.

In shipyards, hull curved plate formation is an important stage with respect to productivity and accuracy control of curved plates. Because the power and its distribution of induction heat source are easier to control and reproduce, induction heating is expected to be applied in the line heating process. This paper studies the moveable induction heating process of steel plate and develops a numerical model of electromagneticthermal
coupling analysis and the numerical results consistent with the experimental results. The numerical model is used to analyze the temperature changing rules and the influences on plate temperature field of heating speed of moveable induction heating of steel plate, and the following conclusions are drawn. First, the process
of moveable induction heating of steel plate can be divided into three phases of initial state, quasi-steady state, and end state. The temperature difference between the top and bottom surfaces of the steel plate at the initial state is the biggest; it remains unchanged at the quasi-steady state and it is the smallest at the end state.
Second, obvious end effect occurs when the edges of the steel plate are heated by the inductor, which causes a decrease in temperature difference between the top and bottom surfaces of the steel plate that is unfavorable for formation of pillow shape plates. Third, with the increase of heating speed, the temperature difference
between the top and bottom surfaces of the steel plate increases gradually.

In this paper the performance of a stepped planing hull is analyzed through numerical simulation of the fully nonlinear flow under a two-dimensional body. The height and location of the step are systematically varied to investigate the resulting free-surface elevation, pressure profile on the body, and fraction of the total lift that is developed on the downstream portion of the body. The results indicate that indeed a larger step height will generate a larger lift-to-frictional-drag ratio. This suggests that the largest step possible should be chosen, with the upper bound for this dimension being the height in which the flow no longer reattaches to the after-body. The results show that the lift-to-frictional-drag ratio varies very little with respect to the step location over the
range studied in this work.
