Our section has been focusing on natural gas as a marine fuel for the Great Lakes, Great Rivers, and the St. Lawrence Seaway for almost a year now, starting with a two-day symposium in Cleveland last year that was organized as a "tutorial" to introduce LNG and CNG to our members.  This year we will again be focusing on natural gas in a two-day format, but with presentations and speakers that address specific issues such as availability, transportation, how natural gas is cleaned and processed as it fows out of the wells, the pipeline structure in the Great Lakes region, liquefaction (large scale and "micro" or small scale for bunkering operations), and similar topics.

Technical Program Summary -

Wednesday, February 13, 2013
Dr. Jerrold L. Hutton and Mr. Ralph Greenberg present "From Well to Waves" tracking the flow of natural gas from the wellhead through the clean up and processing stations, into pipelines or other transportation networks, and finally into either compression or liquefaction facilities for preparation for its use as a marine fuel.

Thursday, February 14, 2013
Dr. Mike Parson will present the final part of his study to convert the Great Lakes Steamships to LNG.  "The Potential Conversation of the U.S. Great Lakes Steam Bulk Carriers to LNG Propulsion - Final Report"

Mr Michael McLean will present a talk on the pipeline system in the Great Lakes region (US and Canada), the present and future availability of natural gas in the region, the location of hte major gas fields, flow capabilities through the lines, and processing of hte gas before it enters the pipelines.

GE will present a joint venture between GE and Chesapeak Energy to build portable "micro" LNG stations that will provide LNG on  a small scale to areas that do not have access to major liquefaction facilities.

Luncheon address by Peter Noble, President of SNAME over buffet lunch.

Tour of CNG/LNG fueling station south of Cleveland for interested attendees.

PAST SECTION MEETINGS

PAST MEETING
Fall Meeting – October 4-5TH, 2012
Ann Arbor, MI

Ms. Ziyan Zhang, Bay Engineering, Inc Sturgeon Bay, WI presented Bay Engineering's designs for converting the S.S. Badger from a coal-fired ferry to a natural gas burning ferry, using both liquid natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG). The Badger is the last coal-fired steamship on the Great Lakes.  View Presentation.

Rick Harkins and Carol Wolosz discussed their recent trip to Norway with Mike Parsons to look at how Norway is utilizing both LNG and CNG in thei marine transporation system. This presentation covers both regulatory issues, government support for various projects, and both single and dual fuel engines. View Presentation.

Paul Ulrich, Encana Energy Corporation, Denver, CO talked about hydraulic fracturing in natural gas wells, how it's accomplished, the risks involved, and the processes used to ensure that "fracking" does no harm to the environment.  View Presentation.

John Callewaert, Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute, Ann Arbor, MI talked about the initiative he is heading up to survey hydraulic fracting in the state of Michigan, and how the initiative may affect public policy on fracking.  View Presentation.

PAST MEETING
Winter Meeting – February 23-24, 2012
Cleveland, Ohio

“LNG as a Fuel for the Marine Industry in the Great Lakes & Great Rivers Region”

An introduction to LNG and CNG, moderated by Gary Van Tassel, with participation by Bob Kamb (Clean Energy Fuels) and Claus Emmer (Chart Industries – manufacturers of cryogenic tanks and equipment). This session is intended to be an introductory and educational forum for SNAME members and other participants, with numerous opportunities for questions and answers by attendees.

Gary Van Tassel Presentation - overview of LNG and CNG as a potential fuel

View Bob Kamb's Presentation - realstic possibility in the near term for LNG and CNG on the Great Lakes

View Claus Emmer's Presentation - challenges of manufacturing tanks for the storing of transportating LNG and CNG

View Dr. Mike Parsons Paper- (Professor Emeritus, University of Michigan)  "The Conversion of the U.S. Great Lakes Steam Bulk Carriers to LNG Propulsion - Initial Report" on the feasibility of converting the remaining Great Lakes steamship bulk carriers to LNG fuel. This paper is a result of work sponsored by the Great Lakes Maritime Research Institute.

View Odd Magne Horgen's Presentation, General Sales Manager for Rolls Royce Marine-Bergen, Norway, will discuss Rolls Royce’s experiences with applications of lean burn LNG propulsion and auxiliary engines and systems in a variety of vessel designs world-wide.

View Peter Jacob's Presentation - (Wartsila) a technical summory of the integrated package provided by Wartsila for the Harvey Gulf Project, concentrating on the LnG bunkering, storage, and supply systems including the basics of duel fuel engine technology.

View Chad Varret's Presentation -  (VP –Harvey Gulf) will provide a short summary of the Harvey Gulf LNG Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) Project and the project’s regulatory and economic drivers.

View Jonas Nyberg's Presentation, America’s Medium-Speed Marine Engine Sales Manager, Caterpillar Inc., Caterpillar’s experience with high-speed and medium-speed spark-ignition gas engines and how this is being leveraged in the development of new dual-fuel marine engines. Mr. Nyberg will also introduce Caterpillar’s retro-fit concept allowing existing MaK M32C and M43C engines to be equipped for dual-fuel operation.

Ken Westcar, Marine Market Manager, Toromont Power Generation Systems, will present a brief review of the role of LNG as a fuel for Great Lakes vessels including power density, capital cost and fuel infrastructure concerns.
