View from the Helm
There are many activities that are underway at SNAME and it has been a busy period transtioning into my new role here. I wanted to share some of my initial thoughts with you about areas of interest and focus. The first is this message and some thoughts on blogs. After thorough discussion we have decided to move the open blogs behind the home page. These blogs are still available after entering our portal and I encourage posting information relevant for our members.
In its place Keith Michel, in his capacity as President, and I will post blogs on subjects of interest to the Society, keeping the home page for official SNAME business. We want to encourage communication and interaction with members, stimulating discussion while upholding the professional image of the Society. We feel this approach will accomplish both. Expect to see notes from Keith and I on a periodic basis, together with occasional special inserts from Mark Eichler.
We had a very good experience recently when Keith posted a message about the Society's position on
potential changes in PE licensure
. There was very good feedback from a broad cross section of the Society and from members who we do not always hear from in our daily interaction. We will do more of this and look forward to generating more contributions like this. We will be able to develop clearly defined postions on subjects in keeping with your needs in this way.
I have an interest in enhancing what we call our service mindedness. We are a service organization, and I want our staff to be genuinely open and helpful to our members. The core of our work involves interaction between staff and members in a variety of committees and other groups. We want this to be a smooth process and to advance the work of these groups in an efficient and friendly way. There are many things we can do to be better at this and we will work on this regularly.
I hope everyone is getting to enjoy some summer. I am happy to be here and I look forward to working with you all.

Thanks for bringing back "View from the Helm". I think this is an excellent way for the SNAME leadership to communicate with our members.
