Student Congress and Student Design Competition

The Student Congress is the highlight event of the Student Program, as if features the annual Student Design Competition (SDC). The SDC offers students an opportunity to meet fellow students from around the country and around the world. It also gives them a chance to show off their skills of engineering and ingenuity. Teams of students are formed and a NAME related design problem is given. A limited amount of time and materials are given to each group, which is tasked with designing and building a vessel to best solve the posed problem. Finally, each team's design is put to the test in the SDC testing tank (really just a kiddy pool!). The winning team takes home a cash prize!

The event is well attended (standing room only for the past two years), with spectators cheering on teams from the sidelines. Be sure not to miss this great opportunity to meet others, challenge your mind, and have fun!

As another part of the SDC, students are invited to submit ideas for the competition. To find out more about entering your idea, click here.

Student Steering Committee Meeting

Following the Student Congress and SDC, the Student Steering Committee (SSC) will hold its annual meeting to elect new officers, make any SSC By-law revisions, and plan the year’s student agenda.

The entire Student Program of the SMTC&E is organized and run by the SSC and its officers. However, the SSC does much more than that. The SSC is tasked with the job of promoting student participation and recognition with SNAME. As such, its officers are taking proactive steps to enhance SNAME student membership.
Click here for more information about the SSC.

The SSC is currently accepting nominations from all students interested in running for an SSC officer position. For more information, or to submit a nomination please contact Matthew Unger munger@mit.edu.

Conference registration badge required.

STUDENT PAPER PRESENTATIONS
Rooms 313 A/B/C
1:30pm – 4:30pm

Two student paper tracks will occur alongside the conference’s professional paper tracks. Presentations will include the winners of several industry design competitions and SNAME Graduate and Undergraduate Paper awards.

Saturday, October 22nd

STUDENT SUMMIT (by invitation)
Ballroom of Americas A (hotel)
8:30am - 12:00 noon

There are over 1,000 student members in SNAME, with new students cycling in every year. Furthermore, students represent the future of SNAME and the marine industries. As such, SNAME recognizes the importance of offering services to suit the needs of its student members.

To better address these needs, the SSC is organizing the first ever Student Summit to serve as a forum for students to meet face to face with the leadership of SNAME and discuss ways in which SNAME can enhance its value to students. All students are invited to attend this very unique event. The Student Summit is not only an outlet to speak to SNAME leaders, but another way in which students can network with industry leaders.
