2004 SNAME Maritime Technology Conference & Expo: September 29th - October 1st

Ship Production Symposium

This symposium is a well-known annual event where results of research supported by sources including the National Shipbuilding Research Program Advanced Shipbuilding Enterprise (NSRP ASE) are presented. This symposium is dedicated to the support and progress of U.S. shipyards, both commercial and naval, in keeping with NSRP’s mission to assist the U.S. shipbuilding and repair industry in reducing the cost of Navy ships while achieving and maintaining global competitiveness with respect to quality, time, cost and customer satisfaction.

Authors will be presenting papers that reflect the interests of the SNAME Ship Production Committee and the NSRP Strategic Investment Plan.

THE NATIONAL SHIPBUILDING RESEARCH PROGRAM

NAVSEA approached U.S. shipyards and requested that they form a collaboration to manage and focus shipbuilding R&D funding to reduce the cost of warships and improve U.S. international shipbuilding competitiveness. From the Navy perspective, improving shipyard productivity and commercial success directly impacts total ownership cost (design, acquisition and life cycle costs) in every Navy ship program. In response to the Navy’s request, 11 shipyards formed a collaboration to manage a program specifically designed to address shipbuilding and repair priorities with a national consensus plan.

Key attributes of the program include:

  • A highly leveraged cross-program construct, effecting improvements on a scale and pace required to impact all current and future Navy ship programs and the industry’s commercial ventures.
  • Coordination of collaborative R&D among all segments of ship construction and repair, reducing cost and time required for both Navy and commercial ship construction, conversion, and repair.
