UPDATE: With only three contesting teams this year the team voting system required for ranking the Innovation, Drawing, and Vessel Construction items is not feasible. We have decided to select the challenge winner using only the race ranking.
The overall challenge winner will be based on weighted sum of the following items:
1. 100% Race Ranking
2. 0% Innovation Ranking
3. 0% Drawing Ranking
4. 0% Vessel Construction Ranking
Race Ranking
Racing will include two Saturday regattas including as many short races on a windward-leeward course as time allows before lunch and one longer natural course after lunch. All races will occur in the Alameda Estuary. Time limits of 5 minutes for short course and 15 minutes for longer course will be imposed to determine finishers for each race.
Race points for each race will be awarded using a standard low point scheme as follows:
1. First to finish: One point
2. Second to finish: Two Points
3. Third and down: Three Points and so on…
4. Did not finish: Points of last finisher plus one point
5. Did not start: Points of last finisher + two points
Race ranking for each contestant will be based on the total number of race points earned for the two regattas, lowest points total leading.
Innovation Ranking
As an incentive for contestants to develop new ways to improve the class and share their ideas, ownership of novel features will be established after the drawings are submitted and these innovations may be adopted by other contestants to improve their designs. The point system is designed to reward the innovators without overly punishing the adopters. As a practical matter, innovation areas that will be awarded points are as follows:
• Foils; arrangement and shapes
• Controls; arrangement and connections
• Rigs: shape and use of new materials
• Other new features other than hull shape
From the time that the designs are submitted and the start of the first regatta contestants may modify all aspects of their design other than the basic hull shape to incorporate other’s novel features.
Novel features will be given the contestant’s name and be included as possible features to use in future challenges. If two or more contestants simultaneously produce the same or highly similar features, they will be given joint ownership and will all receive points when others adopt the feature.
In future challenges the all contestants may use past years’ innovations with out forfeiting points, but they are obliged to indicate the use of feature by noting it on their drawing. Contestants may create new novel feature by significant and important modifications to previous years’ innovations.
Innovation points for novel features will be awarded as follows:
1. Contestants receive one point for each instance where another contestant opts to use the novel
feature of the first contestant
2. Contestants who opt to use another contestant’s novel feature will forfeit ½ point for each novel
feature used.
Innovation ranking for each contestant will be based on the total number of innovation points earned, highest points total leading.
Drawing Submittal Ranking
To encourage complete and first class design drawings, points will be awarded based on a contestant vote for the best drawing submittals. The ranking will be established by a balloting system where by each contestant will be asked to award and rank, in their opinion the three best drawing submittals uploaded to the 5-Ply Challenge website. Contestants will not be allowed to vote for their own submission. Contestants will receive 3 points for each top rank, 2 points for each 2nd rank, and 1 point for each 3rd rank.
Drawing submittal ranking for each contestant will be based on the total number of ranking points earned, highest points total leading.
Vessel Construction Ranking
To encourage good workmanship and vessel finish, points will be awarded based on a contestant vote for the best constructed vessels. The ranking will be established by a balloting system where by each contestant will be asked to award and rank, in their opinion the three best constructed vessels at the conclusion of racing. It is hoped that this ranking will not only award the prettiest, but also the vessel that can best survive the racing season. Contestants will not be allowed to vote for their own vessels. Contestants will receive 3 points for each top rank, 2 points for each 2nd rank, and 1 point for each 3rd rank.
Vessel construction ranking for each contestant will be based on the total number of ranking points earned, highest points total leading.
