Development class sailboat racing is an exciting area of naval architecture that currently has a wide audience. However, most experimentation-based sailboat classes have become too daunting and expensive for people with limited time and money to compete in. The 5 Ply Challenge is intended to provide the least expensive and least time consuming route for would-be sailboat designers/builders to get boats on the water. With vessel materials costs expected to be $300.00 and build times less than 75 hours, this class can fulfill the desire of many folks that have an interest in small boat design, building and racing, but cannot afford the usual steep price of entry. With costs and construction time requirement low, the hope is that competitors can try new ideas, ideally building a new boat every season.
This Website is the clearing house for the 5 Ply Challenge Class where potential contestants can find the Class Rules, Challenge Scoring Scheme, Eligibility Requirements (SNAME or ASNE Members), Schedule of Events, and Information on Contest Entries. The Contestants page includes downloadable plans and pictures of the contestants boat under construction and sailing.the Challenge progresses, this site will include all design submittals, descriptions of contestants’ novel features, and the 5 Ply Challenge Score Card.

It is intended that the 5 ply E-group forum will be used by contestants to share ideas and learn. You must be a SNAME member and subscribe to this E-group to participate. To join the E-group please navigate to the Groups and Networks page and search for "5-ply" (Join 5-ply E-group) (For this season the forum cannot be directly accessed by ASNE members, but they can receive email updates by request to the Contact Us portion of this site. It is hoped that contestants will use the Discussion Forum to discuss issues and share information related to the design and construction of small racing sailboats on the cheap and to schedule brushes (informal racing to allow tuning vessels up prior to the official regattas.)
Please watch this site, as some aspects of the class rules and scoring scheme may be changed. Your thoughts and suggestions for the existing rules are welcome. Please use the egroup forum or "contact us" for comments.
