SNAME Annual Meeting Papers
Thursday - Friday, October 25-26

This year we expect to have 14 outstanding peer-reviewed papers addressing significant recent developments in several branches of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.  There will be two papers relating to New International Regulations; four concerning Energy Efficiency, Alternative Fuels and Environmental Impact; and four describing the influence of wind and waves on ships and wind turbine systems.  The remaining four papers cover a wide range of subjects, from application of System Identification techniques to sailing yacht performance prediction, to quantitative assessment of explosion and fire risks in offshore installations.

Accreditation: We expect that most of the SNAME and SPS papers and presentations will be accredited for professional engineers' continuing education credit.

NSRP SPS Papers
Wednesday
- Thursday, October 24-25

The Ship Production Symposium, hosted by the National Shipbuilding Research Program and SNAME, is an annual symposium that presents original and timely technical papers addressing problems of shipyard techniques and production of merchant and naval ships. It is a forum to discuss the worldwide development of ship production engineering, ship design (including design for production) and other marine technology topics, such as ship operations, shipping economics, and safety.

55 abstracts were submitted to SPS this year versus 46 abstracts in 2011 and the Committee chose over 33 of the 55 for acceptance. In the past couple of years, there has been a rise in the number presentations in SPS which is a healthy sign for the event:

  • 2009 – 10 presentations
  • 2010 – 15 presentations
  • 2011 – 25 presentations
  • 2012 – expecting 33 presentations

Accreditation: We expect that most of the SNAME and SPS papers and presentations will be accredited for professional engineers' continuing education credit.

T&R Sessions
Thursday - Friday, October 25-26

The T&R Sessions offer timely highlights and issues being addressed through the activities of Committees and Panels responsible for the Technical and Research efforts of the Society.  As in previous years, T&R Sessions promise to be an exciting part of the Annual Meeting technical program.   Professor Alan Brown from VPI will again be adding his engaging moderation capabilities to these timely interactive sessions.  Sessions range from a panel on when we will see nuclear powered commercial vessels, a state of the art study on hydrodynamic load predictions, safe ferry design for poor countries, weight engineering innovations, insights into structural failure on passenger ships, air emission reduction technologies, LNG infrastructure for bunkering, and how to develop a quality culture.
