The SNAME Annual Banquet is always a highlight of the Annual Meeting.  Preceded by a hearty and well-attended reception, the banquet is the cornerstone of Annual Meeting activities. Beyond the meal, the Banquet is where SNAME presents its highest award and honors, including SNAME medals and concludes with the remarks by the distinguished Banquet Keynote Speaker.  The 2012 Awards of Achievement to be presented are the Vice Admiral “Jerry” Land Medal “for outstanding accomplishment in the marine field”, the David W. Taylor Medal “for notable achievement in naval architecture and/or marine engineering”, and the Davidson Medal “for outstanding scientific accomplishment in ship research”.  Attendees are also encouraged to attend both the Pre-Banquet and Post-Banquet Receptions at no charge.

2012 Distinguished Banquet Speaker - Richard T. du Moulin

We would like to welcome our 2012 Annual Banquet Speaker, Mr. Richard T. du Moulin, President of Intrepid Shipping LLC


Professionally Mr. Richard T. du Moulin is currently the President of Intrepid Shipping LLC, a position he has held since he founded Intrepid Shipping in 2001.  From 1998 to 2001, Mr. du Moulin served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Marine Transport Corporation.  Prior to this he was Chairman and CEO of Marine Transport Lines from 1989-1998.  From 1974 to 1989 Mr. du Moulin held various positions with OMI Corp, including Executive VP and serving on the Board of Directors.  In 1989 he headed the investor group that purchased MTL through a $144 million LBO.  In 1998 MTL went public thru a back-merger into OMI Corp, a subsidiary of Ogden Corporation, followed immediately by a tax-free split of the companies into foreign flag OMI (NYSE) and US flag MTC (NASDAQ).  In 2000, after acquiring many competitors, MTC was acquired by Crowley Maritime where Mr. du Moulin helped in the transition before departing in 2001 to form Intrepid Shipping with longtime partner Mark Filanowski.


Mr. du Moulin is Chairman of the Seamen’s Church Institute of New York and New Jersey.  He currently serves as a Director of Tidewater Inc., TeeKay Tankers Ltd., and formerly served on the Board of Directors of the American Bureau of Shipping.  He is on the Board of Trustees of the National Maritime Historical Society.  Mr. du Moulin served as Chairman of Intertanko 1996-1999 and is now Chairman of the North American Panel.

In addition to his corporate achievements in the energy transportation markets Mr. du Moulin is an accomplished life-long sailor and ocean racer, participating in 4 Americas Cup Campaigns; 22 Bermuda Races where he is a four time winner in the double handed class; and 3 Transatlantic Races.  Mr. du Moulin, together with Mr. Rich Wilson of Boston, is Hong Kong - New York sailing record Holder and has campaigned in Fastnet; Sydney-Hobart; Transpac; and is a CMA Americas Cup Winner.  He served as Head Ocean Racing Coach at the US Naval Academy, where he is on the Fales Advisory Committee to the Superintendent.

Mr. du Moulin is a safety advocate and has founded the Storm Trysail Club’s Junior Safety at Sea Program where over 4,000 juniors have been trained.

Mr. du Moulin is a popular speaker who participates in and leads a wide variety of both industry and sailing events. He has been awarded the U.S. Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal, Commodore of Connecticut Maritime Association, and the Admiral of the Ocean Sea (AOTOS) Award.

Richard du Moulin holds BA and BE from Dartmouth College and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.  He served as a LTJG in the US Navy from 1969-1972.
