Team STX Canada Marine Takes the Cup - AGAIN!
Skipper Dan McGreer once again takes home pewter as skipper of STX Canada Marine. McGreer is 2 for 2 in the SNAME Cup, winning the initial event in Newport, RI, October 24 of last year.
This time it was a come-from-behind win as team STX Canada Marine needed a strong finish in the final of four races to overcome leads by five other boats. The finish could not have been stronger, as McGreer skippered his Thunderbird, Zoe,, to victory in the final heat, with other contenders for the top prize finishing no better than 4th.
"For 2010 it was definitely a come from behind win," McGreer said. "I credit my crew Ben Thompson, Nic Wayand and Gaelen Krause for convincing me to take a risk and sail out into the center of the lake in a more round about route in order to catch a stronger wind that we used to sail from the middle of the pack into first place."
This year, the Regatta was held on the waters of Lake Washington where participants sailed out of Meydenbauer Bay Yacht Club, one mile from the Hyatt Bellevue. The races were held in 26’ Thunderbirds, a boat indigenous to the Pacific Northwest.
Racing featured 3 buoy races followed by a short distance race north on the lake. The boats then cruised to Seattle Yacht Club to meet other SNAME guests and enjoy a spectacular dinner designed by SNAME food guru Stephen Wright and the chefs of SYC.
Following dinner, the attendees enjoyed an enlightening presentation by Naval Architect Paul Bieker on his work designing high speed skiffs, and structural design for BMW Oracle’s America’s Cup. Scott Rohrer finished the evening by presenting his restoration work on the wooden R Boat RANGER.
