An Overview of Collision Grounding Investigations
Robert James Prior, MSc. AMSNAME
Naval Architect, TMC MARINE
In the last twenty years there have been rapid advances in the technology and instrumentation available to seafarers. Modern ECDIS systems allow ARPA/radar and AIS data to be displayed on electronic charts, enabling early detection of any targets which could become a threat to the safe navigation of a particular vessel. Yet despite these sophisticated aids to navigation, and regulations in place dictating how mariners should avoid the development of close quarter situations, there are still numerous groundings and collisions between vessels occurring each year.
This presentation is intended to look at the role of the independent expert in legal disputes arising from collision and grounding incidents, how the quantity and quality of the data available for analysis and reconstruction has changed, and how some of the various techniques have adapted with the new technology.
