The paper will explore the H&S issues associated with current inspection regimes in enclosed spaces on board marine structures and the risks they pose to human life during survey, operation and repair and maintenance activities.
Many articles and news items have publicised a range of Drone applications by a range of entities from academic research, through to Classification Societies adoption of Drone Inspection regimes, clearly demonstrates that they are technology hat merits further understanding. This paper will focus on tehri use for coating inspection work in particular for small enclosed spaces (Ballast tanks).
While the use of drones for external surfaces could be considered a relatively straightforward operation, the ability to capture the volumes of data generated and analyse the output in “better than real time” by using smart algorithms will be discussed and the potential for such “big Data” to improve coating performance, repair and maintenance strategies and vessel design.
The potential for using Drones in these GPS denied environments in both semi-autonomous and autonomous modes will be discussed and the technology challenges that are faced to achieve consistent quality of images/surveys and the ability to repeat surveys and manage the data generated will be considered.
A number of possible future scenarios will consider how ship design may need to be modified to enable wider use of this technology will be considered. Conclusions and potential routes forward will be drawn to guide future developments.
