Quarterdeck Officers 2018

Quarterdeck Officers 2018

Our Quarterdeck officers work hard to provide opportunities to the University of Michigan Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering department and to facilitate professional and personal growth in these aspiring naval architects and marine engineers. From organizing trips to SNAME section meetings and conferences, to running the Mentorship Program, to providing volunteer and social events, and much more, they are all striving to bring out the best in the NA&ME department.

If you would like to contact any of the current officers, please email quarterdeck@umich.edu

    Commodore

Hello! My name is Rachel Bielski and I am the Commodore of the Quarterdeck Society! I am a Junior in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, and I grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago. Until I came to the University of Michigan, I didn’t know anything about Naval Architecture, and it wasn’t until a freshman year seminar about the different disciplines of engineering that I realized I’d found my calling. I couldn’t be happier that I’m a part of this incredible department. Outside of engineering, I am pursuing a minor in Creative Writing, and I am a research assistant at the Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory on central campus. I can’t wait to see what the next year brings for the Quarterdeck Society.

 Vice-Commodore

Hello! My name is Candace Wiwel, and I am a Junior studying Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, with a minor in Energy Science and Policy. In addition to Quarterdeck, I am an undergraduate representative on the Engineering Student Government Senate, and a part of Relevé Dance Company. I came to college completely undecided about my major, and thanks to the NA&ME and Quarterdeck communities, I could not imagine declaring anything else. This is my second year as a Quarterdeck Officer, and I am excited to continue my participation as Vice Commodore!

 Rear-Commodore

Hi! My name is Peter Rohrer, I am a junior majoring in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering with a minor in Oceanography. I am originally from Northern Virginia, but came to Michigan specifically for the NAME program and haven't looked back since. Outside of classes I am involved in research within the department, and the Michigan Climbing Club. I spent my sophomore year away from Ann Arbor, competing in the 2017 World Solar Challenge with Michigan's team, then spent a semester studying at University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. I am excited to be back in Michigan and I am thrilled to be the Rear Commodore in 2019!

Program Chair

My name is Brendan Zauel and I am a junior studying Naval Architecture at the University of Michigan. Growing up, I never had a physical connection with the ocean, although annual family trips to lakes and oceans were my favorite. I knew I would want to live near the ocean when I got older, and I found that Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering is a great way to accomplish that simple goal, plus all of the great experiences it has to offer. Outside of Quarterdeck, I am a part of the Big Ten Network Student Union, which broadcasts U of M sporting events (not football, though, unfortunately) to live television. As program chair, I am looking forward to making sure Quarterdeck has a great variety of company representatives to give their views of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering industry and its many areas and applications.

  Treasurer

Hi! My name is Maggie Stagner, and I am very excited to serve as Quarterdeck Treasurer for 2018. Being involved in Quarterdeck and the NAME department has made all the difficulties of Michigan Engineering worth it. I have been a swimmer my entire life, and my favorite place on earth has always been Lake Bellaire in Northern Michigan. I cannot imagine my life without water, so the decision to major in NAME was the easiest decision I’ve ever made.

 Social Chair

Hi! My name is Jeb Hamel, and I am a junior in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Born and raised in Maryland, my favorite place to go was the National Aquarium, and I still keep several fish tanks. I came to Michigan for the NAME department, to combine my love of the ocean with a passion for engineering. In my free time, I am also on the board of the Michigan Ballroom Dance Team, lifeguard for rec sports, and intern for the Marine Hydrodynamics Lab.

Service Chair

Hi! My name is Adam Magistro and I am a Sophomore pursuing a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. I’m originally from Morristown, New Jersey but I consider the Chesapeake Bay area my home away from home. Spending tons of time at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore with my grandparents pushed me from a young age to be into boats, which became a natural transition to a major all about boats! I’m extremely excited to be the service chair and give back to the community that has given me so much.
