Underwater Noise Reduction - Approaches to Mitigation

Tuesday, February 12, 2019
6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

This presentation is drawn from work recently undertaken by Vard Marine on behalf of Transport Canada, and presented at a workshop at the International Maritime Organization in London.

The oceans are getting noisier as marine traffic increases. Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) has adverse effects on a wide range of animal species, from the Southern Resident Killer Whales to shrimps.

There are a wide range of techniques and technologies that can be used to reduce the noise from machinery and propellers, some of which can have co-benefits in terms of efficiency improvement or crew and passenger comfort. Often, however, trade-offs need to be made between noise and cost.

This presentation will explain Vard Marine’s approach to categorizing and classifying technological methods of URN mitigation, and some of the challenges that designers and operators may face in future in meeting societal expectations.
