High-Bandwidth Underwater Wireless Communication using a Swarm of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles
Please join us on Wednesday, February 26th on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley's Faculty Club - Heyns Room from 6:00pm-9:00pm as our presentation topic of the evening will be on High-bandwidth underwater wireless communication using a swarm of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles.
Underwater Wireless Data Communication is the most important outstanding problem in ocean engineering, impeding nearly all major research expeditions and many industrial developments. The reason is simple: Electromagnetic waves, at any frequency, are heavily absorbed by water, and Acoustic wave (Sonar) has a narrow bandwidth. Lack of underwater wireless communication has left more than 80% of our oceans unexplored. I will present during this talk our effort to develop a new method for underwater wireless communication with high bandwidth and over long distance. A swarm of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) is used to relay an optical signal form the seabed to the surface of the ocean where it can easily reach satellites (via RF) and hence anywhere in the world.

Alexandre Immas - PhD candidate in Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley
Alexandre Immas is a PhD candidate in Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley. His research is primarily concerned with control and deep learning methods applied in ocean engineering with a focus on swarm of autonomous underwater vehicles, ocean current prediction and wireless communication. He was previously a senior team leader at Nenuphar Wind, a start-up developing a new wind turbine for deep water. He holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Physics from Ecole Polytechnique.Section Meeting Details
