March Paper: Superyacht Building and Management - Impacts, Implications, and Considerations of Newly Adopted Codes

Presenter: John Walker, Managing Director, Braemar Technical Services

Presenter's bio:

John Walker is Managing Director of Braemar Technical Services, a multinational company of 250 technical staff, offering a wide range of consultancy to the shipping, finance, onshore, and offshore energy sectors.

Prior to stepping ashore to “consulting”, John spent five years as Technical Manager for a fleet of superyachts, where he was responsible for new buildings, refits, and maintenance programs.  This included the new building supervision of a 163-meter and 86-meter superyacht, and major refits of yachts, all of which presented numerous technical and legislative challenges. Before getting involved with the superyacht industry, he worked for the Princess Cruises Newbuild team as a commissioning engineer at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan and sailed at sea from Officer Cadet to the rank of Chief Engineer Officer

He is a graduate of Warsash Maritime Academy in the United Kingdom, a Chartered Engineer, and Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology.

Abstract:

A presentation covering the current status of the superyacht market, major new codes and changes to existing building codes.  The changes to large yacht codes will have an impact on design and build considerations for new build vessels and are in some cases retroactive to existing vessels.

The majority of superyachts are built to various "Large Yacht Codes", in use by many of the red ensign group (REG) flag states.  As yachts have grown in size, passenger capacity and technical complexity, new rules have been deemed necessary to ensure that this vibrant sector of the shipbuilding industry continues to deliver safe, viable and enjoyable pleasure vessels.  Designers, project engineers, yacht managers, surveyors, shipyards and yacht brokers should be aware of the implications and opportunities available under the new codes.  This presentation will assist in gaining an understanding of some of the major changes.
