Overview of the COLUMBIA Class Submarines
Guest Speaker: Brian Wilson, COLUMBIA Program Director
The COLUMBIA program is the next major new submarine design in the 117 year history of Electric Boat. As the replacement for the OHIO Class SSBN, it represents a vital part of the strategic deterrence triad, and is currently the Na-vy’s “number one priority.” This brief will provide an overall status of the de-sign program which is progressing to support start of construction in 2021. A detailed review of the changes to the modular construction approach since the OHIO SSBN program, including advancements in fixtures and robotics that ena-ble production of COLUMBIA to support the NAVY’s timelines will be high-lighted.
Brian M. Wilson is Electric Boat’s Program Director for the COLUMBIA Pro-gram, responsible for the future submarine’s entire design/build process. Mr. Wilson joined Electric Boat in 1994 in the company’s naval architecture group. He has held positions in the Concept Formulation group (development of the OHIO SSGN) leading to Design Manager of the SSGN Conversion Program. In 2003, Mr. Wilson led a team of EB engineers and designers in the UK, providing on-site design support and becoming Project Director for the Royal Navy’s As-tute-class attack submarine program. He returned to the U.S. in 2005 as Site Manager of Electric Boat’s SSGN Conversion Program at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, redelivering the USS Ohio and USS Michigan to the U.S. Navy fol-lowing their conversions. Mr. Wilson holds a BS in Ocean Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and an MBA degree from the Massachusetts Insti-tute of Technology’s Alfred P. Sloan Fellows Program in Global Innovation and Leadership.
