Chesapeake Section - Digital Twin in the U.S. Navy

When:  Oct 28, 2019 from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM (ET)
Associated with  Chesapeake Section
Marine engineers have long relied on model-based solutions as tools. The digital twin is just the latest to be leveraged by this community in the design, construction, optimization, maintenance, and sustainment of ships by providing various end users with an "as-is" virtual representation, continually updated with the latest data and information. By properly instrumenting the system and consolidating information throughout the service life, engineers no longer need to make assumptions about the state of the physical asset (e.g., wear on an engine, accumulated stress in the structure, or necessary maintenance) -- these effects are naturally incorporated into the twin as it is updated. These data and insights can then be stored and configuration managed as a product model, shared in a digital thread, and leveraged to answer questions about the asset. This talk will focus on what a digital twin is, the benefits it can bring to ships, and current US Navy investments in this space.
