A wind of change is blowing for a while now into the sails of shipping, one that would shake and re-shape business models, and future design, construction and operation of ships.

In this presentation, the author will revisit the 2-stroke engine selection procedure in an attempt to provide the fellow naval architect and marine engineer with a navigation guide through topics like rating field, tuning, SPC, etc in his task to find the optimum propulsion solution for a given operational trade and vessel type – compliant with Tier III emissions as well as the limitation of Sulphur in fuels.

Considering the soon to enter into force, and long-time announced and coming regulations applicable worldwide in 2020 and Europe in 2021, the presentation will emphasize the pros and cons of X-DF compared to the typical Diesel coupled with exhaust gas abatement technology.

An update of current X-DF order book and operational experience will close the presentation.
