Ship Design, Building and Operations


Wilbun N. Landers served as the Secretary of SNAME from 1946 to 1964 following a distinquished career in the United States Navy.  His career acomplishments and contributions to the Society were recognized through his status as a Fellow Member, and his 1963 receipt of the Jerry Land Medal.  

A 1925 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Captain Landers was directed by the Navy to continue his education, receiving a Masters degree in Naval Construction from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Captain Landers then began a long and distinguished career in the design, construction, and repair of naval vessels.  Many of the Navy's largest aircraft carriers and battleships built during the World War II era benefitted by the achievements he worked into their designs.   

Following his service in the US Navy Captain Landers joined the staff of SNAME.  There followed 17 years of brilliant and dedicated service to the Society -- service which saw membership grow from 4,400 to 7,500 and its local sections expand from 6 to 13.  During this period the Society's Technical and Research Organization expanded from 4 committees to 40 panels, task groups and committees. 

Captain Landers died a year after his retirement from SNAME, on March 25, 1965. 

The Landers Scholarship is part of the SNAME Graduate Scholarships Progam, and open to U.S., Canadian and International applicants who are members of SNAME. Awards are made for one year of study leading to a Master’s Degree in naval architecture/marine engineering/ocean engineering. Applicants must not receive their Master Degree prior to April 15th of the academic year for which the scholarship applies.

One scholarship of up to $6,000 for one year of full-time study may be awarded annually.
