October 18
Topic:          Lengthening of the Mega-Yacht SuRi
Speaker:     Joel Welter is the Chief Naval Architect at Bay Ship and Yacht Co. He is a graduate of Webb Institute and is a past SNAME Northern California Section Chairperson.
Location:    Jack London Square, Oakland CA
Abstract:     Bay Ship and Yacht Co. has recently completed a major overhaul of the Motor Yacht SuRi. The vessel is now 208' x 38'x 13.5'. A key element of the work completed on the vessel is a 36' mid-body extension which was prefabricated prior to the vessel's arrival. The presentation will provide details for how a vessel is lengthened at BSY and explore the problems and solutions that arose during this endeavor.

November 14
Topic:          American Marine Highway Design
Speaker:     Eugene van Rynbach, Herbert Engineering
Location:    Pasta Pelican, Alameda
Abstract:    America’s Marine Highways (AMH) are being promoted by the US government as a way to transfer coastwise trailer traffic from congested highways to the underutilized coastal tradelanes. MARAD and the US Navy have sponsored several design studies by Herbert Engineering to develop a portfolio of suitable vessels for long distance (over 500 nm) coastwise trade that are suitable to the US Navy for sealift transport in times of national emergency (dual-use vessels). Besides taking freight off the roads, marine transportation will also result in reduced environmental impact compared to over-the-road trucks.
The presenter will provide an overview of the results of the studies including describing possible routes, potential cargo traffic along these routes, vessel designs, estimated construction costs, and required freight rate analysis of the most promising routes. Also discussed will be ways to reduce fuel costs and harmful emissions through the use of LNG fuel, environmental enhancements that can be incorporated into the vessels, and ways to improve their energy efficiency.

January 9, 2013
Topic:          The Wave Glider
Speaker:     Francois Leroy
Location:    Pyramid Brewery, Berkeley CA
Abstract:     This presentation discusses the applications of a wave energy harvesting unmanned surface vehicle (USV) called the Wave Glider. Being able to provide the key air-to-water interface on a persistent basis provides an innovative way to collect in-situ ocean data in support of climate studies, meteorological models or regional and local assessments. The presentation will review the concept of the USV Wave Glider, its applications and present field tests of the technology in several recent missions such as the Pacific Crossing PacX, and Hurricane hunting in the Atlantic.

February 13
Topic:          Student Paper Night
Speaker:     TBD
Location:    California Maritime Academy, Vallejo
Abstract:     Senior mechanical engineering CMA students demonstrate their un-derstanding of the design process through the completion of a senior project. This year, a group of students has embarked on a project to improve the tools available to their fellow students: they are designing a remotely controlled salinity testing platform. CMA students en-rolled in the Marine Biology Minor are required to take salinity samples in the bay. This usually involves getting on a boat, collecting water and bringing it back to the lab. The students are offering, and designing, an alternative: a small catamaran platform, equipped with salinity sensors, GPS capability and communication means. It will have an endurance of 25 minutes and students will be able to control it from shore using software. Students have begun the construction phase of the boat.

February 27
Topic:          Icebreakers in the Oil Patch
Speaker:     Peter Noble
Location:    Commodore Cruises, Alameda
Abstract:      This illustrated narrative describes the use of icebreaking ships in sup-port of the oil industry activities over the past 40 plus years from the SS Manhattan voyages through the NW Passage in 1969 and 1970, through the very active period of offshore oil exploration in the N. American arctic in the 1970s and 1980s, to more modern times when special purpose icebreaking ships are supporting both oil exploration and production activities in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, Baffin Bay and Fram Straits, the Barents, Pechora, Kara Seas and the Sea of Okhotsk. SNAME and its members have played key roles in these developments.
