Massachusetts Institute of Technology - In January, 13Seas hosted a well-attended movie night where students and faculty came to watch SeaQuest. Enthusiastic watchers enjoyed food and refreshments while they got to take a break from classes and experiments. In the beginning of February, the MIT Faculty Club hosted the New England Section’s Student Paper night, where undergraduates from Maine Maritime Academy, MIT, UNH, and the Coast Guard Academy presented their recent research. Stevens Institute of Technology - The past few months have been exciting for the students of Stevens Institute of Technology. Beginning with the re-opening of the improved towing tank in December, Stevens has hosted several speakers. During the towing tank celebration, Jesse Falsone, Senior Naval Architect at CSC Advanced Marine Center spoke about computational fluid dynamics and job opportunities available to interested students. The same day, Dr. Edward Lewandowski of BMT Designers and Planners, Inc. discussed the types of design and analysis in which his company participates. Read more ...

Texas A&M University - The SNAME student chapter at Texas A&M University in College Station consists of energetic Ocean Engineering students under the leadership of senior Blake Allen. Eric Lieb and Brian Riordan are Vice Presidents and Ashley Frey and Eric Brown round out the student leadership. The student chapter holds business meetings every other Thursday. Student interest is high and free food at meetings is a good draw for the underclassman. Activities in the Fall of 2006, included the Discover Engineering Day on campus and attending the annual SNAME Texas Section shrimp broil. Blake Allen, Brian Riordan, Ashley Frey, and Eric Brown attended the SNAME Annual Meeting in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. The 2005-06 senior class design teams received their plaques and cash prizes for 2nd and 3rd place in SNAME’s International Student Offshore Design Competition. Read more ... (+ photos!)

University of Michigan - The semester kicked off with the largest attendance at a Quarterdeck meeting ever! We currently have over 35 active and involved members – and our goal this year is to continue to grow our membership and expand our activities. A committee has been formed to investigate options for renovating the Computer Design Lab. The lab is critical to students at the University of Michigan used throughout the undergraduate years. Plans include a Needs Analysis and review of designs as well as a fundraising campaign to fund the much-needed renovations. Read more ...

Virginia Tech - The Virginia Tech SNAME/ASNE chapter is back in full swing, with a record turnout for their first meeting of the spring semester. Eighteen students will be traveling to Newport News, VA to visit and tour the Northrop Grumman shipyard. This opportunity will allow the Virginia Tech students to be exposed to the ship production and construction aspects of ship design. The SNAME/ASNE chapter is also working on plans to visit the NAVSEA – Small Craft Division in Norfolk, VA as well. Students are looking forward to learning about the design and testing of small planning craft and the new innovative designs that are developed at the small craft division. Read more ...
