The Shipbuilder is a tribute to an industry that has played a critical role in America’s proud military and economic history. Honoring the dedicated men and women who worked as shipbuilders in America, it is also a landmark project for the 135,000 citizens of Alexandria, Virginia and two million annual visitors, thus celebrating the nation’s long history as a shipbuilding and maritime community.
The Shipbuilder is a 7’ bronze statue of a 19th century rigger atop a 3’ elaborately carved granite base, installed in Waterfront Park in Old Town, Alexandria, the site of some of Alexandria’s original shipyards. The monument is a primary project of Alexandria Arts Safari, a nonprofit organization that supports public art, education and history projects.
The Shipbuilder Monument is funded through donations from area foundations, corporations, and individuals such as yourself. Your support is critical to our success.
To make a tax-deductible pledge, just visit http://birdies.BoozAllenClassic.com/AlexandriaArtsSafari before June 8 and follow the directions to fill out the pledge form. During last year's Tournament, pros recorded 1,626 birdies. Based on that figure, your donation of even one cent per birdie would net $16.26 for the Shipbuilder Monument (minus credit card processing fees). All participants who pledge a penny per birdie or more will automatically be entered into a random drawing for prizes including $10,000 toward a new automobile at FitzMall.com, a weekend trip to Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, Barnes & Noble gift cards, an Apple iPod, a Dell Axim handheld PDA, tickets to a variety of cultural events and more.
