Eastern Canadian Section October 4, 2007 SNAME ECS (Eastern Canadian Section) and the Ottawa Branch of CIMarE began their inaugural event for 2007/2008 with a joint technical evening on 4th October 2007. The President of the Chamber of Marine Commerce, Ray Johnston (note ex-CEO of Canada Steamship Lines), presented the Challenges and Way Forward for the Canada's Marine Industry. Ray's presentation covered a wide variety of topics from the bottom line and economics of operating ships in the Canadian context as well as the sustainability of the Great Lakes / St Lawrence Seaway (economics, environment and engineering infrastructure). In addition, Ray commented on the demographic challenge and the growing opportunities that now exist in throughout all aspects of the marine industry. The evening was extremely well attended with approximately 50 members and non-members. On completion of the presentation, there were several insightful questions on the state of the seaway and the way forward. Ray was very candid when referring to government and industry involvement in the future efforts of the organization to sustain the seaway. The
attendance by young professionals was an inspiration as they helped with
the arrivals and participated in the discussions and were recipients of
door prizes at the event. ECS will continue to encourage the enhancement
of the “young professionals” as they will be an important
part of the future of the organization. The event was very well received
and future sessions are planned for “lunch and learn” attendance
by the younger professionals interested in SNAME. “very positive presentation and instant feedback from a well versed presentation” “The choice of Ray Johnston was also a very good one. Obviously an excellent speaker on the (his) topic, although not technical, nevertheless was relevant as it typically falls on the engineers to make the "requirements" a reality.” SNAME
also provided an update on the SNAME ECS Goals for 2007/08 and in particular
the “SNAME Young Professionals Program” that we are starting
in Ottawa. Your
next opportunity to join the Eastern Canadian Section (ECS) is always
open. Please take the time to attend one of the functions. We are very
active and continue to look for ways to improve service, as our membership
grows. Active participation is encourage, and volunteers for the ECM executive
board are always welcome!!
