2004 PNW Marine Cup Golf Tournament -
A Big Success

On Saturday June 12, 2004 the Second Annual PNW Golf Tournament was held at Sudden Valley Golf & Country Club. Just 10 minutes from the I5, the Country Club is a picturesque golf club, nestled in an evergreen forest between a lake and hills. There were three teams of three players each. The weather held out to the very end of the day, ensuring that fun was had by all. At the end of the game we had a pleasant and very hearty dinner in a private room at the Club’s restaurant. It was nice to see two of the spouses were able to join us. After dinner, awards were handed out, and although no one won the hole-in-one prize, there were still lots of prizes to go around. Winners of the day’s “Texas Scramble” tournament included Rex Fearn, Dave McMillan and Nigel Hastings. Congratulations! Each winner received an umbrella and an individual trophy, and will have his name engraved on the PNW Marine Cup. All these gifts were courtesy of Lloyd’s Register. Remaining prizes, including a golf towel, fishing rod and cap, donated by Rolls-Royce, were handed out based on the results of a draw. We wish to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors: Finning Power Systems, Lloyd’s Register and Rolls-Royce. Next year the tournament will be back in Canada. So, mark your calendar for a June 2005 game of golf with SNAME!

Section: Pacific Northwest
Organizers: SNAME & ASME
Location: Vancouver, BC
Nature of Meeting: Technical
Date: Wednesday, June 23, 2004

On Wednesday, June 23, 2004, the Pacific Northwest Section co-sponsored a student event in partnership with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) as part of ASME’s 2004 Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering conference, which was held that week in Vancouver, BC. The student event took place at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and featured a demonstration from the University of British Columbia (UBC) student group, Remote Yacht Team, as well as posters from the UBC entry to the 2004 International Student Offshore Design Competition (ISODC). The Student Event took place just before the OMAE Banquet Dinner and OMAE attendees were bussed to the yacht club enroute to the dinner. Approximately 80 people were in attendance.

The Remote Yacht Team has developed a semi-autonomous sailboat model, SailBot. SailBot is a 2-metre sailboat model designed to be almost entirely self-sufficient. The boat is arranged so that it can monitor wind speed and direction and adjust the sails accordingly while steering around a pre-determined course. The student team led by team-founder, Eric Berzins, demonstrated the model in the water while meeting attendees watched from the yacht club’s dock. The Remote
