Student Paper Night

The NY Metro Section’s Student Paper Night was the best-attended meeting of the year for the Section. Webb Institute seniors presented two papers. Matthew Unger and Jessica Kleist presented the first paper, “The Effects of Transom Stern Geometry on the Resistance Characteristics of High-Speed Displacement Vessels”. Three models of a systematic series of transom stern hulls were built with varying transom submergence values and keel slope profiles. They were then tested in the towing tank to determine what transom design characteristics affect hull resistance. In addition, generated wave profiles were documented and compared. Model test results showed that the residuary resistance of the hulls is greatly influenced by transom immersion. Tests were also run to compare hull resistance with the hull trim fixed and with the hull free to trim. Fixed trim test runs were found to have less resistance than when the hull was free to trim.

Brendan Abbott and Daniela Hanson then presented the second paper, “Design, Construction, and Performance Prediction of a Parametric Series of IACC Yachts.” The purpose of this paper was to investigate the hull performance of International America’s Cup Class (IACC) yachts by varying hull characteristics while still meeting the requirements of the rating rule. Current design data was hard to gather due to the competitive environment of the America’s Cup and the resulting reticence to share hard technical data. Reverse engineering from photos and magazine articles was used to determine hull parameters. Using the best available data, the beam to draft ratio was varied yielding three hulls. Towing tank testing and computational fluid dynamics (SPLASH) were used to develop data for comparison of the performance of the different hull types.

After a spirited question and answer period, the meeting was adjourned.
