On June 21st, SNAME New England Section and ASNE’s Northern New England Section met for a joint meeting at the New England Center on the campus of the University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH.

Don MacPherson, VP Tech Director and Vincent Puleo, Project Engineer presented their paper,Estimation of Entrained Water Added Mass Properties for Vibration Analysis. A summary on the survey of calculation methods that are available to estimate the wetted added mass properties of a propeller for vibration analysis was provided. Ranging from simple parametric formula to more detailed radius-chord integration, the paper presented and validated calculations for axial added mass of entrained water and torsional added mass moment of inertia of entrained water.

L to R: Mr. Vincent Puleo, presenter; Mr. Don MacPherson, presenter; and Mr. David Herbein, New England Section Chair.

Don enhanced the learning experience by providing each table with a 2 inch diameter four-bladed prop and leading the attendees through a series of practical demonstrations of added mass using water goblets as test tanks.

At the conclusion of the presentation, I presented Don and Vince SNAME logo mugs.

Mr. Dick Akers also presented the Section Chair with a Certificate from the SNAME Council recognizing his contributions this past year as New England Section Chair.

L to R: Mr. David Herbein, New England Section Chair; Mr. Dick Akers, New England Section Vice-Chair.
