Section April 13, 2006 On April 13th, 2006 the sixth technical meeting of the Greek Section for the fiscal year was held in the presence of about 60 members, non-members and students, during which Dr. Piero Caridis, Associate Professor at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) presented his paper on the topic:“Accidents at Sea – Analysis Methodologies and Selected Case Studies”. In this presentation, a methodology for the analysis and the interpretation of accidents at sea, the Event Tree Network, was presented. The speaker stressed the fact that the underlying effort of marine accident analysis is not only to establish the causes, but more importantly, to propose and implement measures and procedures that will prevent them from occurring in the future.
In recent years the role of the human factor has become recognized as being predominant in all kind of accidents, especially those at sea. Efforts have been made to develop methodologies that can be used to analyze and interpret events, not only to gain an understanding of root causes, but also to propose measures for future avoidance. The presented Event Tree Network is one such method. In order to gain more insight into this method, the analysis of two accident cases was presented, including a well documented case of the Titanic loss. In the event Tree Network method, the analysis extends beyond the actual incident to the broader operational and regulating environment within which vessels operate. In all cases the human factor is studied in detail. Of course, in all cases, a reliable, extensive and detailed documentation of the circumstances before, during and after the accident is necessary to reach realistic and useful conclusions. In the case of the Titanic, measures that have since been taken were discussed. In the other case the procedures, training and supervision were discussed. At
the end of the meeting, on behalf of SNAME’s Council, Greek Section
Vice Chair, Petros Lalangas, presented a certificate of appreciation to
Gregory Grigoropoulos, for his loyalty and in recognition of the accomplishments
made during the last two years as Chairman of the Greek Section.
