Atlantic Section SNAME Canadian Atlantic Section – Student Section’s Charybdis* Challenge 2003, July 15, 2003 The third annual boat building competition was held on a lovely afternoon in mid July. The aim of the game was to build a boat out of a pile of junk and then navigate a course on Long Pond. Great skills were displayed by the dozen students who came out for the challenge. Most of the boat builders were spirited Term 4s, although a couple of Term 7s were back for their second showing. The students split into 2 teams and were given the materials listed at right (per team) to build from using only hand tools. Construction began at 2:00pm and the race was held at 4:00, giving the teams 2 hours to design and construct their craft. It being a breezy day, both teams went with sailboats, although the sail plans were markedly different. The square-rigged entry had a skipper and mate – the first entry in three years to be crewed by 2 men. The other entry was mastered by 1 woman and used a single spinnaker. The course was all down wind from the dock at the Splash facility to the end of the pond (and before going under the bridge and down Rennies River!). Both vessels looked pretty clumsy on land, but once in the water, the sails filled and the start of the race was excellent. The race was close all the way down the course and ended in a happy draw. Both boats held up very well over the entire course in what was a nice summer wind. An impressive show for all hands!A big thanks to Heather Forsey & Pam Stone for organizing this game and to the students who participated. Thanks too for ensuring the materials were reused/recycled after. ·

* The competition is named after a mythological whirlpool off the coast of Sicily. Charybdis sucked down great volumes of water three times a day. Together with the six-headed monster Scylla, Charybdis was one of the twin hazards encountered by Odysseus during one leg of his journey home. Odysseus avoided Charybdis but only by sailing beneath Scylla’s lair. Not to be cheated out of a meal, the monster snatched six of the hero’s sailors off the deck.
