SNAME Student Section & RINA Branch – Brunel’s Big Boat Building Bash – September 26, 2003.

The local SNAME Student Section and RINA Branch organized Brunel’s Big Boat Building Bash 2003 in September. The tinfoil boatbuilding contest was similar to the previous competition in 2001.

Each team had to construct a watertight boat (using tinfoil, coat hangers, and a few other bits) that could carry as much weight as possible. There were no constraints placed on the size or shape of the boat, but a sugar cube placed in the bottom of the boat at launch had to stay dry through the loading and unloading operations. The teams were given two hours to construct their boats after which they were tested to see which had the highest capacity. Seven teams competed in the event, including one team sprinkled with professors. The team of professors lost, again.
