Second Section Paper Accredited for
PE Continuing Education Credit

The paper, “Practical Guide in Regard to Marine Bilge Water Properties and Treatment Technologies,” presented by Hal Alper of MYCELX Technologies to a joint meeting of the NY Metropolitan Section, the Eastern USA Branch of IMarEST, and the Society of Marine Port Engineers of NY on November 17th, was accredited by the Practicing Institute of Engineering for one PDH (Professional Development Hour). A paper presented the previous month, “The New Generation of Diesel Engines,” presented by Poul Korsgaard of MAN-B&W, was similarly accredited.

Accredited Section presentations and conference papers not only support all SNAME members who require continuing education credit, but may also improve attendance by drawing other professionals to participate in our activities.

Professor Alan Rowen has been certified as an evaluator for these programs, and will soon be circulating guidelines to SNAME Sections and conference committees.

SNAME Member Benefit Update

SNAME recently reviewed all aspects of its sponsored insurance program. After a careful study, we decided to change the plan administrator to Selman & Company of Cleveland, Ohio, a leading provider of insurance services to associations nationwide. Selman will now manage and market the SNAME Members' Insurance Program.

A postage-paid card to request information about any of the products in the program was enclosed with the 2005 dues notices of US-resident members. Selman can also be contacted by telephone at 1-800-556-7614. Finally, SNAME’s website now has a direct Internet link to Selman (on our Member Benefits Page) or just go www.selman.cc/sitelet/index.cfm/sname.

PE Update

According to an article in the June 2004 issue of Power Magazine, mandatory Continuing Professional Competence (CPC) requirements are in effect in 27 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia and Wyoming. Five other states still have voluntary CPC requirements: Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Utah. Maine’s requirements become mandatory with the December 31, 2005 renewal. The Massachusetts board supports voluntary requirements and the New Jersey board is studying the issue.

The Society’s efforts to help our PEs meet the mandatory CPC requirements continues with technical papers being accredited at the annual meeting and with local section papers in New York also being accredited. Instructions will be sent to the local sections. It is planned that most, if not all, of the 2005 SMTC papers in Houston will be accredited. The Education Committee’s Continuing Education Program offerings are being considered for accreditation, with one course presently being reviewed. The Education Committee’s Continuing Education Business Plan calls for many other offerings to be made on a regular basis.

Starting in January, development of the Practices, Abilities, Knowledges, Skills (PAKS) study will be getting underway. A new survey can then be conducted to identify revisions to the NAME exam specification. There will be a need for some two dozen or more members to help in this effort. All those who would like to participate should email their interest to dchapman@sname.org or wmaclean@sname.org, who are in the process of putting the team together. We’ll keep you posted on the effort.

U. S. Engineering Deficit:
Leading Educators Propose Solution; Report Released

Although U.S. college graduation rates increased by 26 percent from 1985 to 2000, graduation rates for engineers decreased by 23 percent during the same period. To reverse this trend more youngsters must be drawn into the engineering pipeline

American Society for Engineering Education has released a report, "Engineering in the K-12 Classroom: An Analysis of Current Practices and Guidelines for the Future," which reveals that 88% of teachers believe that engineering is important, but only 30% of teachers feel that many of their students could succeed as engineers. This finding demonstrates a clear disparity between the perceived value of engineering and its low profile in the K-12 classroom. The report can be viewed at www.engineeringk12.org.
