“Super-sized”
in Sunny San Francisco |
|
We are beat,”
quipped one staff member, then in the next breath, “but at least we’re
upbeat!” That was the general feeling of the Headquarters staff upon its
return from SNAME’s largest, and indisputably best, Annual Meeting
in over 10 years. In the vernacular of the day, the World Maritime
Technology Conference was a ‘super-sized’ conference and exposition.
For those who attended this year’s meeting in sunny San Francisco you
already know this, but for those who didn’t, we’d like to share
some of our successes with you.

PE Update
A number
of our members have expressed concern about being able to adequately prepare
for the NAME exam as well as the Fundamentals of Engineering exam that they
have not yet taken. While their concern can be appreciated, their abilities
should not be discounted. Several who have taken the PERC and been successful
on the NAME P.E. exam have also taken the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering as
it is now called) and been successful there as well. They have told us that
in taking the PERC they have had to review the fundamentals materials as well
and it all came back to them more easily than they had anticipated.
The P.E.
Review Course (PERC) Web site is up and running at www.SNAMeLearning.org
and you can register on line. The basic structure of the course is presented
and the Unit topics are included. The course consists of eleven (11) Units,
one starting each week. The course starts on January 5th and should conclude
about March 24th, giving another three weeks for final review before the April
16th exam date. The course costs $500 for members ($650 for nonmembers). Unit
assignments are posted on Monday, with solutions posted the following Friday.
On Wednesday of the second week, an online session is held with the Unit's instructor
from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM EST, to review and discuss the assignment or related
matters. An email address is also given for the Unit instructors so that extra
help can be requested if needed.

Greek Section - D. Savitsky Report
Daniel Savitsky, Professor
Emeritus, Davidson Laboratory, Stevens Institute of Technology, presented
a report, "On the Subject of High -Speed Monohulls" at
the October 2, 2003 meeting of the Greek Section in Athens, Greece. It is
important to note that these are lecture notes for students in naval architecture
and as such deal with fundamentals that should already be familiar to the
practicing naval architect.

SNAME Scholarship Update
Scholarships
in both the graduate and undergraduate levels are again being provided
by The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers to encourage
men and women to pursue studies in the naval architectural, marine
engineering, ocean engineering or closely related fields. Scholarships
are available to any student regardless of nationality, though distribution
of funds to non-U.S. or Canadian citizens is limited to the relative
proportion of SNAME membership represented by non-U.S. or Canadian
citizens (currently about 23 percent). Applicants must be SNAME members,
and preference is given to applicants planning to study in U.S. or
Canadian schools. In special cases, U.S. or Canadian scholarship recipients
can study at fully accredited international schools.

OTC Celebrates 35 Years
The 2004
Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) marks 35 years as the offshore
industry’s largest annual gathering. The conference takes place 3-6 May
2004 at Reliant Center at Reliant Park in Houston.
OTC debuted
in May 1969 at the Albert Thomas Convention Center in Houston, gathering 4,200

the pulse of the offshore industry, exceeding attendance of 108,000 participants
in 1982, and then stabilizing in the 1990s. In 2003, OTC drew an 18-year high
attendance of 50,655 participants.
OTC is recognized
among Tradeshow Week’s “Top 200” tradeshows in the world,
and was ranked #46 in 2002 based on exhibition size and attendance. Click
here for more.
For
the first time this year, OTC also has a home base on the Internet at www.OTCnet.org.
Past year’s web sites are archived there along with technical programs.
Users can access the OTC Papers Online through this site as well. The site also
