Scholarships Available thru SNAME
Scholarships in both the graduate and
undergraduate levels are again being provided by The Society of Naval Architects
and Marine Engineers to encourage men and women to pursue studies in the naval
architectural, marine engineering, ocean engineering or closely related fields.
Scholarships are available to any student regardless of nationality, though distribution
of funds to non-U.S. or Canadian citizens is limited to the relative proportion
of SNAME membership represented by non-U.S. or Canadian citizens (currently about
23 percent). Applicants must be SNAME members, and preference is given to applicants
planning to study in U.S. or Canadian schools. In special cases, U.S. or Canadian
scholarship recipients can study at fully accredited international schools. Click

Greek Section of SNAME Receives Formal
Recognition
The Greek Section of SNAME has been formally
recognized by the Greek authorities. Michalis Pantazopoulos reports that activities for the
2002-03 year kicked off on November 27th, with a meeting attended by 75 members and guests.
The technical presentation featured Stavros Hatzigrigoris's paper, "The Use of Floating Docks
for Shipbuilding in Korean Shipyards." The use of floating docks for the construction of large
tankers and bulk carriers, one of the first applications by a major shipyard, was dictated by
the ever-increasing number of orders awarded to Korean shipyards. Representatives for the
Daewoo Shipyard attended the meeting, which was hosted by Kristen Navigation, a strong
supporter of the Section.

Intelligence, Vol. 3/No. 45, 29 November 2002

Terry
Flanagan Honored with Proclamation |
 |
|
On
Tuesday, December 10, the Headquarters’ staff, accompanied by president
Joe Cuneo and president-elect Bruce Rosenblatt, gathered to celebrate
Terry Flanagan’s retirement after 35 years as Technical Editor of
SNAME’s three Journals, the Transactions and countless reference
texts.

27 year Affiliate Member
Many
would agree that it was Terry’s love of ships and attention to detail
that contributed to the publications’ reputation of excellence,
and to the levels of esteem in which they are regarded around the world.
Phil Kimball read a proclamation prepared especially for the occasion
in which he declared the day, and all December 10th’s henceforth,
as “Terry Flanagan Day”.
