Chinese general's 300-year-old ships to be salvaged
BEIJING - The remains of the warships of historical Chinese figure Zheng Chenggong,
who reclaimed Taiwan from Dutch control, are expected to be salvaged next year
after being buried under sea for over 300 years. The site off the coast of Dongshan
county in south-east province of Fujian was discovered two years ago when two
fishermen stumbled across some relics during low tide, reported Beijing Youth
Daily yesterday.
Chinese underwater archaeologists, who were sent to investigate the fishermen's
mysterious finds, were surprised to find an ancient warship submerged in the
waters near the port of Dongshan. Apart from the host of ammunition and chinaware
on board the ship, the most compelling evidence that it was part of Zheng's
fleet was the Chinese character guo, meaning country, etched on its four copper
blunderbusses. The character is a unique trademark of the general's naval weapons.
A second vessel, said to be from the same fleet, was found nearby in October
last year. Zheng, a Ming loyalist of mixed Chinese-Japanese parentage, was better
known as the founder of Taiwan where he fought unsuccessfully against the new
Qing rulers.

Marine Industry Unfairly Taxed?
A recent commentary by Don
Frost, the President of the Connecticut Maritime Association, noted that "the
maritime industry generates, on average, $16.2 billion annually and receives
back from the federal government $3.9 billion - a 24% recovery factor. Highways
generate $34 billion in revenue for the government and receives $25 billion
back - a 74% recovery factor. Aviation generates $11 billion annually and receives
$10 billion - a 91% recovery factor."

LINK-OF-THE-MONTH
The Link-of-the-Month
feature was initiated in the February 2002 issue of the SNAMeNewsLetter.
The purpose is to feature interesting and timely web pages and sites which have
links from the SNAME web site. As you can see, many of the links were Section
web sites - these are all well done and informative pages - however, I ran out
of Section sites in November!
For those of you
featured as a Link-of-the-Month
in 2002 - Congratulations and
keep up the good work! For the Sections that do not yet have an active page
- you are most welcome to contact SNAME HQ for instructions and suggestions.
E-mail me, Connie
Cali-Poutré, Manager, SNAME Website at: connie@sname.org
or
