Admiral Kramek Named SNAME President-Elect

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) named Robert E. Kramek president elect of the organization at its recent Annual Maritime Technology Conference & Expo in Houston, Texas. Kramek, President and Chief Operating Officer of ABS, one of the world’s leading classification societies, will commence his term January 1, 2007, succeeding current SNAME President Dr.Roger H. Compton.

Admiral Kramek is a former Commandant of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) from which he retired as a Four Star Admiral. “SNAME provides an essential forum for the exchange of ideas, information and innovation between naval architects and marine engineers in the United States,” says Kramek. “It is also one of the foremost technical bodies in the world that works closely with its counterparts in the other leading maritime nations. The continuing challenge facing the leadership of the Society is to effectively align its focus with the needs of the maritime industry while at the same time best serving the immediate needs of its members.” Read more ...

Engineering Graduates in 2004 Better Prepared
than Graduates of a Decade Earlier

Press Release from Penn State, College of Education: Students who earned undergraduate engineering degrees in 2004 are better prepared to enter their profession than were similar students who finished their degrees in 1994, according to a study recently completed by the Penn State Center for the Study of Higher Education (CSHE).

The 3½-year study of the impact of new accreditation standards in engineering was commissioned by ABET, Inc. and presented October 27 at its annual meeting in San Diego. ABET is a federation of 30 professional and technical societies and the accrediting body for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology. PE Update

It seems that each month there is another message from a member who has it erroneously in mind that P.E. Licensure is being driven by SNAME. But this is simply not so. The licensing of professional engineers in the United States and the oversight of their practice has been on-going for at least a century. Each of the 55 licensing jurisdictions in the US has its own set of disciplines, but that does not alter the requirement for an engineer to be licensed in order to offer engineering services to the public in that jurisdiction. For an example of a recent ruling by a juridiction related to unlicensed practice click here.

It is important to remember that SNAME wishes to help its members and the profession and that is the particular focus of the P.E. Licensure Committee. The NAME P.E. License exam and the P.E. Review Course are specifically directed toward helping those who wish to become licensed to practice their NAME knowledge and skills. No other purpose is in mind.

If there are any questions please email them to me at wmaclean@sname.org or to David Chapman at dchapman@sname.org. A response will be forthcoming promptly.

Best regards, Walt Maclean
